Global Initiatives

AUM Global Initiatives

Auburn University at Montgomery’s Office of Global Initiatives welcomes all international students. Our staff is dedicated to serve international students as they transition to American life and become acquainted with various social, cultural and academic differences they may incur. We believe these efforts will help create a world-class educational experience for our international students.

Every year, AUM students, faculty and staff celebrate International Education Week, an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education promotes programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attracts future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences.

Global Initiatives

International student, you are welcome here.

AUM is a close-knit and inclusive community. We have a relatively small student body (around 7,000), so you won’t get lost in a crowd. Our beautiful campus is an excellent environment for learning, our faculty is world-class, and the emphasis on small class sizes means that you’ll get a more hands-on, personalized college experience. We sincerely hope you decide to join the hundreds of other international students from over 45 countries who have chosen Auburn University at Montgomery. Please contact any of our staff, below, with questions.

Meanwhile, please download our English-language brochure or learn more about becoming an AUM international student.

Services

Consider us a one-stop resource for assistance in (but not limited to):

Employment

Optional Practical Training (OPT) is temporary employment that is directly related to an F-1 student’s major area of study. Eligible students can apply to receive up to 12 months of OPT employment authorization before completing their academic studies (pre-completion) and/or after completing their academic studies (post-completion). However, all periods of pre-completion OPT will be deducted from the available period of post-completion OPT.  Questions?  Please let us know.  We are here to assist.

CPT is defined as employment, which is an integral part of an established curriculum, including: “alternate work/study, internship, cooperative education, or any other type of required internship or practicum which is offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school.” Source: [8 CFR 214.2(f)(10)(i)]. CPT is available only prior to the completion of your degree program and you must have a job offer at the time of application. CPT employment may not delay completion of the academic program. Students must maintain full-time enrollment during CPT.

English Language Skills

International students apply to AUM with varying levels of competency in the English language, and the Office of Global Initiatives helps guide you through the process of improving your English skills. To be admitted to AUM, students need a score of 5.5 on the IOS (an English proficiency test). However, with a score of 5, you can enter a pathway program where you can take half ESL classes and half academic classes until you make the appropriate IOS score. If you initially score less than 5, you would only be able to take ESL classes and begin academic classes when you retake the IOS and show the desired improvement. Please see more information on English as a Second Language (ESL) here.

Celebrating International Students

The  Office of Global Initiatives plans programming and events throughout the year. Each November, AUM students, faculty and staff celebrate International Education Week, an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education promotes programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attracts future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences.

Each day of International Education Week includes an event in which various departments around campus participate. Examples include:

  • Art Around the World, a fun, hands-on experience that celebrates the visual arts from various cultures.
  • Cricket tournaments (which are quite rare in this part of the U.S.!)
  • International dinners
  • International tea and coffee hours
